Restrict Team/Group Creation Permissions in RingCentral Messaging
Summary
Customers are requesting the administrative capability to restrict standard users from creating new teams, groups, or group chats within RingCentral Messaging. The primary goal is to maintain a professional environment and prevent members from creating unauthorized channels to discuss non-work-related matters.
Problem Statement / Business Use Case
Currently, any user within an organization can create teams or group chats without administrative oversight. This presents several challenges for business management:
Non-Work-Related Distractions: Without restrictions, members frequently create casual, social, or non-work-related groups that distract from daily operations and impact productivity.
Lack of Content Control: Administrators cannot easily monitor or govern the proliferation of these unauthorized rooms, raising concerns regarding company policy compliance.
Platform Clutter: The uncontrolled creation of channels makes it difficult for employees to navigate to official, productive corporate spaces.
User Story
As a RingCentral Administrator, I want the ability to disable team and group chat creation for standard members so that I can ensure all messaging channels remain strictly professional, authorized, and focused entirely on work-related matters.
Proposed Solution & Expected Behavior
Admin Portal Control: Implement a permission toggle within the RingCentral Admin Portal under Roles & Permissions (e.g., Allow user to create Teams/Group Chats).
End-User Enforcement: When this permission is disabled for a user or role:
The "Create Team" or "New Group Chat" options in the RingCentral App should be hidden or grayed out.
Attempting to start a mass chat will restrict them to authorized direct messaging only.
Approval Workflow (Optional Add-on): Alternatively, provide an option where a user can request a team, which must be approved by an Admin before it is created.
Impact & Benefits
Workplace Productivity: Keeps employee focus entirely on operational goals by eliminating the creation of casual, chatroom-style groups.
Corporate Governance: Empowers IT and HR compliance teams to enforce strict professional communication policies across the organization.
Enterprise-Grade Control: Aligns RingCentral with security and governance standards expected by enterprise clients who require total oversight of collaboration spaces.
