We received over a hundred spam messages yesterday from many different phone numbers with the body:
"Coinbase: Congrats! You've won 0.31 BTC in our giveaway! Reply to this SMS with CLAIM to receive details."
About 80 of those came in within 7 minutes! Every SMS has the exact same text.
Afterwards, we received 2 with this body:
"COINBASE: We have received a withdrawal request from an unknown device. If this was not you, please cancel here: [URL included here]"
Then today, starting at 7:52am, we received 35 SMS spam messages with this text:
"COINBASE: Unauthorized transaction has been made on your account please cancel: [and it shows a long URL here, the exact same on all of these messages]"
While typing this Comment, we just received an SMS with the body:
"COINBASE: You won 0.31 BTC, to receive redeem link, please type 'REDEEM'.
If you don't want to redeem your reward, you may ignore this message."
RingCentral needs a way to filter out SMS which have certain keywords. Also, I fault the server that delivers these SMS to clients like us, because a simple algorithm could (and really should) be installed which detects when the SMS system is being used to spam paying RingCentral customers. In these scenarios, the same text is being hammered on the RC servers, something legitimate humans would not do. The red flag here is that the hammering is done from multiple senders/numbers to a single recipient! No legitimate use of SMS would ever allow multiple unique phone numbers to hammer the same exact text message a hundred to 200 times within minutes to a single recipient. We've been wasting time trying to Block & Report as Spam these identical texts, but it takes way too long, requiring 6 button presses to get to the Block/Report feature and back to the list of texts! Where's the bulk checkbox action so we can do this in one go? Why doesn't the RC server have a way to filter hundreds of the same text to the same recipient, especially in such a small window of time? If this persists, we will discontinue service. We cannot spend this much time playing whack-a-mole. If RC cannot immediately deploy filtering for such obvious hammering spam messages, we might as well just use our own cell numbers for business, as it is far easier to deal with this kind of spam on Android SMS apps than RC's app.
